Fuso launches V8 Canter in US
In a land where utes are fed steroids and called pickup trucks, Fuso has injected Canter with some serious American muscle.
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America has fitted a Vortec Series 6.0L Petrol V8, coupled to a best-in-class Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission, to three Canter models ranging from 4.5T to 8.8T GVM.
The Power Solutions International / General Motors powertrain packs a hefty punch of 297hp and 504Nm – so Canter can go toe-to-toe with those supersize utes.
“While a V8 Canter might suit the US, it’s hard to see it having an application in New Zealand,” said Fuso NZ managing director Kurtis Andrews.
“That said, Canter’s number one position in the market has as much to do with its versatility as its reliability and high level of spec. If there’s strong enough demand for something new from the range, it might be a question of ‘watch this space’!”
